I love stainless steel rope for wicks in my gennies... It literally lasts forever, and wicks superbly..
Make sure though that you buy decent rope, from a good vendor, not ebay stuff. makes a huge difference.
Heres the first decent video i found that explains how to use this.

Cheers for that taff!! Still looks like a LOT of faff, but I do like the presenter style, educational and explanatory. It's good to hear the reasoning for all the procedures. I guess 9 months on the same wick makes the faff worthwhile, but the learning curve seems steep and long!!

Its not really mate. I thought the same thing when i started using mesh and rope in genisis attys, but once you get it down its fairly fast and easy to do. You don't really need to do things like put juice on the rope and burn it off 5 times etc. Once or twice is enough. Can have a new wick and coil in a genny in about 10 minutes or so, once you have it down pat.
And like you say, 9 months on the same wick is great, how many cotton wicks would you have had to do in that amount of time.
By the way, I have gennys here that have had the same stainless steel rope wicks in them since i bought them, several years ago. I dont change them, i just get them red hot, take off the power and stick them under a hot running tap a few times... Gets rid of the old juice taste and all the crud off the coils. Literally last you forever.
