Everyone seems to have there own way of doing this eatmabb for me if the coil does not need to be changed then this is what I do. Rinse the entire base under a warm water tap therefore cleaning the entire base. I then pull the cotton up out of the wells twist it in opposite directions making it thinner and easier to remove without distorting the coil. Dry the base. I then dry burn the coil and brush off any dried on burnt residue with a fine copper/brass fine bristle brush (used for cleaning suede material) and then with a clean coil I'm ready to rewick with new cotton

Sniping the cotton certainly helps to get the old one out.

I know that people will do it different ways when changing cotton, but for someone that has never do it before it gives them an easy way to do it until they get more experience doing it and find there own way to do it.
